State & Obernuefemann Roundabout Safer than Previous Intersection
The State and Obernuefemann Roundabout design has provided a remarkably safer intersection for our residents and visitors as they are driving in our City. In addition, it has also mitigated traffic congestion and pollution.
The roundabout officially opened on July 14, 2008. Since it’s opening, the Police Department has responded to a total of seven accidents. Four of the accidents involved two vehicles colliding and three accidents were single car incidents that involved striking some portion of the roundabout. There were no injuries involved in any of the accidents and only two of the seven resulted in a vehicle being towed. The statistics involving no injuries and minor vehicle damage can both be attributed to low speeds that are required to safely navigate the roundabout.

During the period July 14, 2006 through July 13, 2008, the Police Department handled a total of 24 accidents at the old intersection, all of which involved at least two cars and approximately 50% involved injuries. It is important to note that the intersection was closed for at least two months during this period for the construction of the roundabout, so it’s safe to assume that the accident totals would have been higher than 24 had the intersection remained open for that two month period.
Groups or individuals who are planning a community event are encouraged to submit event details to us for inclusion in the City Quarterly. Please mail the information to Pam Funk,
