Fifth & Sixth Graders Remind Motorists to Obey Speed Limits
Last summer the O’Fallon Police Department sponsored a speed limit design contest where all fifth and sixth grade students in the O’Fallon schools were invited to draw a design for a 25 mph speed limit sign and create their own slogan to go with their design.
The administrators and teachers from each school picked the top three designs for their respective schools and then members of the O’Fallon Police Department picked the winners. The classrooms that submitted the winning designs each received a $100 prize.
The six winners:
· Richard Sison, E.K. School, Mrs. Derby’s class, “Don’t Be A Clown, Slow Down”
· Jenny Cornwall, Marie Schaefer School, Mrs. Schuyler’s class, “Nice And Slow...the Way to Go”
· Samuel Peter, St. Clare School, Mrs. Zittel’s class, “Please Obey...Kids at Play”
· Lucas Bennett, Central School, Mrs. Musso’s class, “If You Mess Up...You Pay Up”

· Taylor Engel, Moye School, Mrs. Ballard’s class, “Keep It Slow...Kids on the Go” (pictured below with Officer Craig Koch)
· Keely Vasatka, Evans School, Mrs. Witkus’ class, “Slow Down in O’Town” (pictured below with Sgt. Mark Berry)
All six winners were recognized for their creativity in designing their signs as well as their assistance in helping us to remind O’Fallon motorists that it is important for them to obey speed limits in residential areas.
The new speed limit signs were installed last fall and are displayed in the neighborhoods that each of the winning schools serve.
While O’Fallon neighborhoods provide an extremely safe environment for our children, it never hurts to remind motorists to check their speed and to slow down when necessary. These new signs will serve as a positive and unique reminder for our motorists and we thank all the fifth and sixth grade students in O’Fallon for participating in the contest.
