Mary Smith Retires
Mary Smith, O’Fallon’s Library Director for the past 20 years, will be officially retiring on October 31, 2007.
Mary will be missed by library staff, residents and other city staff, and we sincerely wish her well in her retirement.
During her tenure with the City, Mary was involved in many projects that make our library the great facility that it is today. Mary was intricately involved in the planning of the current library building that was built in 1995. The first referendum to fund the new building failed, but with the perseverance and dedication of local leaders, including Mary, the second referendum passed and a new library building was born.
Mary oversaw the library automation project which connected the O’Fallon Library with the Lewis & Clark Library System in 1996. Once the automation project was launched, O’Fallon Library patrons were able to search for materials throughout the entire system and to check them out via the O’Fallon Library.
In 1999, thanks to Mayor Gary Graham and the O’Fallon City Council, Mary oversaw the completion of the second floor of the library, which added more square footage for the display of library materials.
More recently, Mary recognized the need for wireless internet service to be available at the library and launched such service in 2006. In addition, a new internet reservation service was launched in 2007 where residents can check out library materials from their home computers.
Mary has been a driving force in getting our library where it is today, and we wish her “happy trails” in her retirement years.
