Rate Increase
O’Fallon’s 40 year agreement with Illinois-American Water Company, the supplier of O’Fallon’s water, calls for an annual rate increase in October of each year. The rate increase is directly tied to increases in the Consumer Price Index. When the agreement with Illinois-American was reached last year, the expectation was that increases would be 2% to 3% percent per year.
However, Illinois-American found it necessary to increase their wholesale water rates by nearly 7% this year due to one-time expenditures for Homeland Security measures at their facilities.
Even though O’Fallon residents will see nearly a 7% increase in their water bills, this increase is approximately 4% less than they would have paid under the old rate structure.
The average O’Fallon water bill will rise $1 to $1.50 per month but will still be at the lowest rate in the Metro East. Other consumers served by Illinois American are experiencing rate increases of around 11%.
The rate increase for next year is expected to return to the 2% to 3% range.
