Amidst the cloudy skies and soggy grass, the first ball games were played last night at the Family Sports Park. The O’Fallon Parks and Recreation Department opened fall league games for adult co-ed softball and boys baseball. The games turned out to be a test for the ballfields’ state-of-the-art drainage system and all of the games were played as scheduled.
The fall league is a “soft opening” for the Sports Park. We wanted to have an opportunity to experiment as we learn how to operate the new park. Games will be played on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights. Response has been positive, with 18 men’s adult softball teams, 9 co-ed adult softball teams, 6 U12 baseball teams, and 4 U10 baseball teams. In addition, we have tentatively scheduled a boys baseball tournament on September 15-16.
We are very pleased with the turf and the ball fields. They are designed to drain quickly, be resilient to frequent use, and are well lighted for evening use. In addition, the new playground at the park has gotten steady use, despite the blistering heat. After managing the fall league, we plan to offer a full slate of leagues and tournaments in 2008.
