Democracy on the Front Lines
City Administrator’s Blog

Without a doubt, this is one of the most exciting presidential campaigns in recent memory. The nominations for both parties are up for grabs and every vote counts. Following yesterday’s Super Tuesday primaries for 24 states, there are no clear winners. This is clearly what democracy is all about and voting is one of our most important civic duties.
Nevertheless, I did not vote yesterday. In fact, I have never voted in a primary election. My primary responsibility as city administrator is to objectively implement the policies and laws approved by the City Council. I work for the entire City Council and the aldermen have diverse political affiliations. I try not to favor one political persuasion over another.
My position as city administrator requires me to be nonpartisan and apolitical. In primary elections, voters must declare one party. I believe that aligning with one party in a primary election could compromise my relations with the City Council and I could be perceived as partisan in carrying out my duties. It is a risk I am not willing to take.
I was pleased that voter turnout was so high across the country yesterday and I am interested to learn how the campaign plays out. And perhaps you will see me in line on November 4 as I vote in the general election.
