April 20 City Council Meeting Update

April 23, 2009
Here is a summary of Monday’s City Council meeting agenda items. The items are listed in the order as they appeared in the agenda. Click here to see the full texts of the resolutions, ordinances, and staff reports. As a reminder, resolutions, motions, and special event permits only need to be approved once to become official. Ordinances are required to be approved in two readings (over two meetings) before they become official.

Here are the items that were approved by the City Council:

Resolution supporting a State Capital Improvement Bill: The state legislature is currently considering a comprehensive capital bill and the IML has requested that cities approve this Resolution to show how important the issue is to the state of Illinois. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (federal stimulus) has brought some needed federal dollars to our state for infrastructure projects and Governor Quinn recently signed into law a mini-capital bill which is basically a starting point for a road and transit program. Those two actions are helpful; however, a comprehensive capital bill is needed.

Ordinance approving the Annual Budget (2nd Reading): The City’s fiscal year begins on May 1. The budget contains line items for how the City will spend its money over the next twelve months.

Special Event Permit for Chevy’s Cinco de Mayo: This is an annual event at Chevy's Mexican Restaurant on May 5 involving special music, food, and beverages.

Special Event Permit for the “Mayfest Auto Show and Kid’s Run:” Although the O’Fallon Booster Club has cancelled their traditional Mayfest, they are planning a “mini-mayfest” in Community Park on May 17 including a car show, live bands, food, and beverages.

Tax Increment Financing Ordinances: Five Second Reading ordinances dealing with the proposed Regency Park Tax Increment Financing District are on hold for legal review.

In addition to the agenda items, a plaque was given to Mary Schmidt for her four years of service as an alderman/woman for Ward 1. Ms. Schmidt devoted many hours serving the residents of the City of O’Fallon and I appreciate her commitment.

Now you’re up to date. Next Monday night, committee meetings will be held for Finance and Administration at 5:30 p.m., Community Development at 6 p.m. and Public Safety at 6:30 p.m. Note the special starting for the Public Works Committee.
