I have mentioned several times over the years that the City’s annual budget is dependent on sales tax. 48% of the General Fund revenues come from sales tax. We know that most of those revenues come from car dealers, but we do not know how much sales tax comes from each individual business. The Illinois Department of Revenue is either unable or unwilling to give us the data on each business’ sales tax contributions.
However, the Department of Revenue has released to us the top 15 sales tax generators in O’Fallon. We do not have the total amounts for each business, but we know the businesses collected $4,005,070.22 in sales tax.
As expected, Auffenberg Chrysler is off the list due to its closure last year. Also off this year’s list is Quik Trip. New members of the top 15 are Aldi and FKG Oil Co. (owner of MotoMart and Papa Vitos). It continues to amaze me that Walgreens and a gas station such as MotoMart bring more sales tax than the Mazda, Kia, and Volkswagen dealers. They obviously do substantial volume to achieve similar sales levels as the car dealers.
Here are the top 15 sales tax generators this year (June 2009-May 2010) compared to last year (May 2008-April 2009). Since we do not have the sales taxes for each business, they are listed in alphabetical order:
