A Weekly Note from Mayor Gary L. Graham
“Traditional Values, Progressive Thinking”
O’Fallon’s Parks & Recreation Departmen has teamed up with QRS Recycling to offer single stream recycling at Community Park and the Family Sports Park.
This new recycling program in our two main parks is a wonderful opportunity for our park visitors to assist us in becoming a more “green” community. In order for the program to work effectively, it will take effort on the part of everyone who visits our parks, but is a small price to pay in saving our environment for future generations.
Single stream recycling allows multiple products to be recycled in the same container. For example, park visitors are now able to place paper, cardboard boxes (broken down), plastic, aluminum and steel cans in the same receptacle. Fifteen receptacles have been placed in Community Park and ten to fifteen at the Family Sports Park. For the convenience of our visitors, each recycling receptacle has been placed next to a normal trash container and is clearly marked as a recycling receptacle.
There are a few items that are not allowed in the recycling receptacle: glass containers, styrofoam, and paper products that are food contaminated. If the item you are discarding has just a little food on it, it will need to be placed in the normal trash container.
Parks & Recreation staff will evaluate the program at the end of the fiscal year which occurs on April 30, 2010. At that time, it will be determined if the program should be adjusted, expanded or discontinued.
Please help us make this program a success. We can’t make it work without your help and cooperation. For more information on the recycling program in the parks, please contact Calvin Beckmann at 622-1566.
This new recycling program is another example of why O’Fallon is such a great community in which to live.
