A Weekly Note from Mayor Gary L. Graham
“Traditional Values, Progressive Thinking”
With fall just around the corner, I’m certain that many O’Fallon families are interested in cleaning out their garages or basements and disposing of unnecessary items before winter weather arrives.
In addition, it is the time of year to check your siding for mold. Mold usually grows on the north side of your house and left unattended, can damage your siding. A combination of Joy dish detergent, water and bleach should be sprayed on the siding and left for approximately five minutes. After five minutes, spray off the mixture making sure you rinse all residue. You may need a soft brush to completely remove the mold.
To make it convenient for our residents to dispose of unwanted items, Waste Management provides monthly collection services, year-round.
Residents can simply place their bulky items at the curb or alley next to their trash and yard waste on their last pick-up day of the month and Waste Management will pick the items up. The monthly collection of bulky items is included in the standard service rate of $17.03 per month.
This monthly bulk item pick-up service provides O’Fallon residents with a convenient, easy and timely means of disposing of unwanted items, and I encourage residents to take advantage of the service.
Bulky items are defined as all types of solid waste that cannot be placed into a 32-gallon trash can or a 96-gallon mobile cart, but can be carried to the curb by two persons, and does not exceed 150 pounds. Bulky items include household equipment and furniture, but do not include automobile parts or components, batteries, tires, computers, appliances and household hazardous waste items.
Residents who have appliances that they wish to dispose of may call Waste Management to schedule a special pick-up of the appliance at a cost of $18.11 per appliance.
O’Fallon’s American TV and Appliances store, located at 1237 Central Park Drive, launched an electronics recycling program for the community late last year. The service is free to consumer households who drop off televisions, monitors, computers and other electronics at the store. No purchase is necessary and any brand of electronic item will be accepted. You may contact American TV at 622-6000. No commercial or business items will be accepted. The electronic materials collected will be processed in an environmentally responsible manner that protects the local environment.
In addition to American’s electronic recycling service, the City of O’Fallon and the O’Fallon-Shiloh Chamber of Commerce will be hosting an electronics and appliances recycling event on Saturday, October 9 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Carriell Jr. High School, 451 N. Seven Hills Road. There will be no fee to recycle small electronics (computers, monitors, printers,VCR’s, stereos, etc.) and a $5 fee will be charged for each large electronic item (working TV’s 24” & larger, washers, dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, air conditioners, etc.). Items that will not be accepted include paint, tires, chemicals, non-working TV’s, console TV’s and household furniture. Tax deductible receipts will be available the day of the event. Final details about the event, including an
itemized list of acceptable items, will be posted on the City’s web site at www.ofallon.org once they are finalized. We will need volunteers to assist the day of the event. If you would like to volunteer a couple of hours of your time, please contact Sue Erb at serb@ofallon.org or 624-4500, ext. 3.
I hope that you and your family take advantage of these great services. It’s a great opportunity to dispose of unwanted items in a safe and responsible manner. The strong working relationship between City Hall and the residents we serve is yet another example of why O’Fallon is such a great community in which to live.
