The DARE program has been taught to sixth grade students in the O’Fallon Schools for several years. Currently the program is taught at Marie Schaefer, Central, and St. Clare Schools. It is a 16 week program taught by a uniformed police officer. The program is designed to help students recognize and resist the pressures that may influence them to experiment with alcohol and drugs. There are lessons that cover peer pressure, resolving disagreements, stress, self-esteem, assertiveness, and much more.
Classes are held once a week for one semester. Each student is required to complete a student workbook and write an essay to graduate from the DARE program. All students who complete the program participate in a graduation ceremony at their school. Graduates receive a DARE t-shirt and a certificate. Students graduating from the program are also invited to attend a lock-in at St. Clair Bowl that is held for DARE graduates only.
Events and Activities
The DARE program also sponsors dances for Jr. High Students in the community. There are about four DARE dances held each school year. The dances are held at the American Legion and chaperoned by off-duty police officers. Jr. High students can enjoy 3 hours of dancing, soda, and popcorn.
Each year the O’Fallon Police Department DARE Program participates in a Cardinals baseball game that is a special salute to DARE students and their families. Students and their family members receive tickets for the game at a discounted rate. The students wear their DARE t-shirts and participate in a pre-game gathering. They get the opportunity to view batting practice and meet players.
During December the DARE program sponsors a Breakfast with Santa. This event is held at the Cavins Center and is scheduled for December 11th this year. Santa and Mrs. Claus are there to visit with the children and hear their Christmas wishes. Parents and children can enjoy donuts, bagels, juice, milk, and coffee. Children can make craft projects, get face paintings, and make animal balloons.
