Dan Gentry Speaks About O’Fallon’s New SCADA System
O’Fallon, Illinois – March 27, 2008 -- Mayor Gary L. Graham is pleased to announce that Dan Gentry, O’Fallon Public Works Operations Manager and Bryan Claxton, Project Manager for Burns & McDonnell will conduct a presentation illustrating O’Fallon’s uses of computerized mapping software to a joint meeting of the Missouri Water Environment Association and the Missouri Section of the American Water Works Association on Tuesday, April 1, 2008.
The software that will be demonstrated at the meeting is called a SCADA Viewer. SCADA stands for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition and is the system that operates and reports on O’Fallon’s water utility. The information from this system is displayed as a map through O’Fallon’s Geographical Information System (GIS) software. Map products generated by the software allow the City to better manage and maintain its utility and infrastructure assets. O’Fallon’s effort to integrate SCADA and GIS as a real-time visual data feed is innovative and unique in the utility industry. In addition to being a new way to access utility system data, the SCADA system has also saved the City money by eliminating the costs related to graphics and web page
development that is normally associated with this type of effort.
O’Fallon’s SCADA Viewer is currently in the final stages of testing on the City’s internal computer network. In the coming months, this Viewer will become available to City Water employees for secure access from remote locations, such as their homes. This feature will allow quicker and easier diagnosis of potential water system problems when they occur after normal working hours and will ultimately help to provide better and more consistent services to our customers.
