Census Enumerators Wanted - Earn Extra Money Helping our Community

NEWS FROM O’FALLON CITY HALL
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Earn Extra Money Helping our Community

O’Fallon, Illinois – April 23, 2008 – Beginning in mid-to- late May, the City of O’Fallon will begin conducting a Special Census in certain areas of the City to reflect the increase in the City’s population since the last Special Census was conducted.  Only those residents in subdivisions built since 2005 will be counted during this process.

The City of O’Fallon is currently accepting applications for enumerators who will go door to door to collect the information needed for the census.  Enumerators will be paid $12.50 per hour and should be able to work at least 20 hours per week until their assignments are completed (approximately six weeks).  Applicants must be U.S. citizens, 18 years of age (or at least 16 years of age with a high school diploma), physically able to do considerable walking and climbing stairs, and write legibly.  Applicants will be required to pass a written test to show they can follow instructions, do arithmetic, and perform in other areas related to the census.  Accepted applicants will be required to go through a consecutive three day training process conducted by the census coordinator.  O’Fallon residents are highly encouraged to apply for these positions.

The Census Bureau requires a pool of 150 applicants from which they will test and ultimately choose approximately 50 workers.  If you have a neighbor, friend, or know of a stay-at-home mom who is looking for temporary, part time work, please let them know about this great opportunity.  For those of you who have college age children, this is also a good opportunity for them to earn a little extra money during their summer break.

Applications are available on the City’s website at www.ofallon.org or at City Hall, 255 S. Lincoln between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.  Please contact April Mitchell at 624-4500 ext. 9-1130 if you need additional information.  Application deadline is May 9, 2008.

The purpose for the Special Census is to allow the City to capture state revenues such as State Income Tax, Motor Fuel Tax, and State Use Tax, which are based on per capita (population) distributions.  It is projected that the City will receive an additional $135.85 per year per resident once the special census is complete, which translates to approximately $272,000 in increased revenue per year to the City.

“The Special Census initiative is an important process for us because it allows us to capture revenue.  This additional revenue will help us to continue providing our residents with the services that they desire, with no increase in City property taxes.  I encourage residents to not only apply for the enumerator positions, but to also participate in the Special Census if they reside in one of the areas to be canvassed”, said Mayor Gary L. Graham.

Census takers will be going door to door at various times of the day and evening to collect a few facts about each member of the household such as their name, household relationship, sex, date of birth and age, Hispanic or Latino origin, and race.  The interview will take no more than seven minutes to complete.  All information obtained during the interview will only be used for the purpose of the Special Census.  This information is absolutely confidential under the United States Code, Title 13.
