FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
StormReady® Severe Weather Spotter Training
O’Fallon, Illinois – January 25, 2010 – Mayor Gary L. Graham is pleased to announce that StormReady® Severe Weather Spotter Training will be held on Wednesday, February 24, 2010 at City Hall in Council Chambers at 6:30 p.m.
“This is a great opportunity for residents who wish assist our community by being a storm spotter,” said Mayor Graham.
The training is free and is open to anyone residing in St. Clair County who would like to attend. The training will last approximately two or two and one half hours and will cover the basic information needed for any person to become a certified spotter. Attendees will learn how a storm develops, what features to look for, where to find them, and how and where to report the events. All attendees will receive their spotter certification at the end of the class and no testing is required to earn the certification.
The spotter training class helps the City meet National Weather Service (NWS) guidelines as a StormReady® community, a certification O’Fallon received in 2008 that will be in effect for three years. At the end of the three years, the City will go through a renewal process. StormReady® encourages communities to take a new, proactive approach to improving local hazardous weather operations and public awareness. It also arms communities with improved communication and safety skills needed to save lives and property, before and during severe weather and flood events.
To register for the class, please contact Jon Nolan at 624-4500, Ext. 3 or via email at jnolan@ofallon.org.
