Why doesn't my property tax go farther in ensuring that our roads are better or less congested?
A home with an assessed value of $150,000 generates a significant amount of property tax; however, only about $8.00 a year of that tax ends up in the Public Works coffers for support of street lighting, road repair, snow plowing, storm water maintenance, etc. A typical residential street light costs the City about $8.00 per month. So it takes that home plus 11 others to support that one street lights operation for a year. Fortunately, with voters’ passage of Proposition S in 2000, the City is now able to resurface many of its streets for the first time in many years.
Where do all of the sales tax dollars collected through Proposition S go?
The Proposition S tax dollars collected are used for street, sidewalk, and storm water improvements. The Capital Improvements Program (CIP) provides examples of how this money is to be used.
