A big thank you is well deserved for these dedicated students from the O’Fallon Township High School OTHS Student Council and their sponsor, Mrs. Tiffany Niedringhaus. As seen in the photos above, the students are taking pride in their community by planting the Rain Garden at the State Street Roundabout during the month of May.
With the assistance of Calvin Beckmann, City of O’Fallon Park and Recreation Department’s Grounds Superintendent, the students planted a variety of low maintenance perennial native grasses and flowers that are beautiful and environmentally friendly. Once the Rain Garden’s plantings are established their deep roots will absorb rainwater tainted with grime and fluids from the many vehicles that pass through the roundabout. As the roots soak up the pollutants they turn them into biologically benign materials. This process will have a positive impact on the environment.
The Rain Garden’s beautiful plants provide a pleasant view for the roundabout and as you drive toward the O’Fallon Sports Park. The student’s efforts will have long lasting effects for years to come as the Rain Garden is enjoyed by many.
This landscaping project was chosen by the OTHS Student Council and their sponsor as a spring service project. The City of O’Fallon and OTHS look forward to future projects of this nature.
