Director of Public Safety John Betten received his Bachelor of Arts in Urban Affairs/Political Science from St. Louis University in 1981 and his Masters of Arts in Public Administration from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in 1996. He is also a 1997 graduate of the School of Police Staff and Command at Northwestern University Traffic Institute in Evanston, Illinois. He has 19 years of cumulative experience in managing and directing law enforcement agencies and special police task forces.
Prior to his appointment in O'Fallon, Chief Betten served the Fairview Heights Police Department for 18 years. During his career in Fairview Heights, he served as a Lieutenant, an Investigator, Deputy Commander for the St. Louis Metropolitan Major Case Squad and Deputy Director for the Metro East Auto Theft Task Force.
Chief Betten is a member of the Southern Illinois Chiefs of Police and serves as a board member for the Boy Scouts of America St. Clair County Youth Diversion Program.
