From our Traffic Safety Unit
The O’Fallon Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit (TSU) wishes everyone a safe and happy New Year and would like to pass along a reminder of two important traffic laws which took effective January 1st:
- Operating a cell phone while driving: A person, regardless of age, MAY NOT use a wireless telephone at any time while operating a motor vehicle on a roadway in an established school speed zone or on a highway in an established construction or maintenance speed zone. 625 ILCS 5/12-610.1
- Occupant restraint: Every driver and passenger (no matter age or seated position in the vehicle) MUST wear a properly adjusted safety belt. 625 ILCS 5/12-603.1
The TSU has taken measures to provide community awareness regarding the “operating a cell phone” law by purchasing four (4) “no text/no phone zone” yard signs. These signs will be periodically placed within school speed zones and construction/maintenance speed zones throughout the community. Furthermore, the TSU has partnered with the Driver’s Education Department at O’Fallon High School and will regularly instruct and lecture in the classroom.
The goal of the TSU is to gain voluntary compliance of all the traffic laws through community awareness and education as well as enforcement programs. The TSU is eager to answer any questions from the citizens. Please feel free to contact any of them anytime.
