National Telecommunicator Week - April 11, 2016

NEWS FROM O’FALLON CITY HALL FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

O’Fallon, Illinois – Mayor Gary L. Graham and the City Council have issued a Proclamation declaring the week of April 11, 2016 as National Telecommunicator Week in O’Fallon.  National Telecommunicator week recognizes the pivotal role played by telecommunicators, dispatchers, communications operators, and radio control personnel; all people who utilize telephones, radios, computers and technical skill to provide support to O’Fallon’s Police Department, Fire Department, Emergency Medical Services and other governmental field personnel.

“O’Fallon’s telecommunicators play a vital role in our community every time an emergency occurs. These professionals work long, stressful hours to ensure that top notch emergency services are provided to the citizens of O’Fallon,” said Mayor Graham.

Each year, the second full week of April is dedicated to the men and women who serve as public safety telecommunicators. In 1991, Congress proclaimed it as a nationally recognized week.

Each and every day, millions of people depend on the skill, expertise and commitment of these professionals. National Telecommunicator Week enhances public awareness and promotes the much needed education regarding important public safety issues and legislation by placing national attention on the seemingly nameless and faceless individuals who help save countless lives by answering emergency calls, dispatching emergency professionals and equipment, and providing moral support to citizens in distress.

The O’Fallon Department of Public Safety Telecommunications Team is comprised of dedicated people serving two communities, two police departments, a fire department, and emergency medical services.  These Telecommunicators handle a multitude of critical calls on a daily basis, some life-threatening, and relay safety and medical information to first responders.
