City of O’Fallon Named a Purple Heart Community

O’Fallon, Illinois – At the November 5, 2018 City Council Meeting, O’Fallon was named a “Purple Heart Community.” O’Fallon was proclaimed a Purple Heart Community in appreciation for the sacrifice of Purple Heart recipients in defending our freedoms, to acknowledge their courage, and to show them the honor and support they have earned.

The Proclamation was read by O’Fallon Alderwoman, and Purple Heart recipient, Gwendolyn Randolph.

“O’Fallon and the Metro-East area have a large, highly decorated veteran population including Purple Heart recipients and it’s important that we honor them,” said Mayor Herb Roach. “I encourage everyone to attend the Salute to Scott event on November 10, 2018; at 10 a.m., where we will honor all Purple Heart recipients in attendance. Please also participate in the upcoming Veterans Day Events.”

The Purple Heart is the oldest military decoration in present use and was initially created as the Badge of Military Merit by General George Washington in 1782. It is specifically awarded to members of the US Armed Forces who have been wounded or paid the ultimate sacrifice in combat with a declared enemy of the United States of America.

Signs recognizing O’Fallon as a Purple Heart Community will be installed at major entrances to the City.
