2019/07/01 - Mayor's Column: Thank You Captain Cavins

“An Open Door to O’Fallon”
A Weekly Note from Mayor Herb Roach

This week, the City of O’Fallon will be saying a heartfelt goodbye to one of the community’s biggest fans and public servant. Captain James Cavins of the O’Fallon Police Department will report for duty in the City of O’Fallon for the last time on July 5th. “Jimmy” as many in O’Fallon know him by, will be retiring from the O’Fallon Police Department after 29 years of service.

Jimmy’s law enforcement career began in O’Fallon in the early 1990’s. He has served in many different assignments over his career, including Patrolman, Detective, Sergeant, School Resource Officer, Lieutenant, and lastly, Captain of Operations. Although he is retiring from O’Fallon, his career will continue. Jimmy has been selected to be the new Police Chief of Town and Country, Missouri. I know that Jimmy will do a tremendous job in his next step.

Captain Cavins means a lot to the O’Fallon community. Jimmy was born and raised here and he has spent his entire career in O’Fallon. The Cavins family, including his father (Ron) and Mother (Joan), has done a lot for this community and it is greatly appreciated.

It will be sad to see Jimmy leave, but it is a great honor for him to become Police Chief of Town and Country. It is also a great honor for the O’Fallon Police Department and the entire O’Fallon community to see one of our own selected to lead another community. Congratulations (Chief) Jimmy Cavins!

On a different note, I want to remind everyone that Fireworks Over O’Fallon will be taking place on Sunday, July 7th, beginning at dusk (approximately 8:30 p.m.). The firework show will take place over the O’Fallon Family Sports Park, but it should be visible from many areas in O’Fallon. Please see the Press Release (https://www.ofallon.org/home/news/fireworks-over-o%E2%80%99fallon-%E2%80%93-july-7-2019) for more information.

Spectators are asked to view the show from safe and legal parking areas. All parking lots in the Family Sports Park and Hesse Park will be open. Park restrooms will be open during the event. Park concession stands will not be open. However, vendors are encouraged to contact the O’Fallon Parks & Recreation Department at 618-624-0139 if they would like to sell items in the Family Sports Park during the show.

Parking will be prohibited on Venita Drive and Taylor Road. Venita Drive and the west entrance of the Family Sports Park will be closed to traffic approximately five minutes before the firework show begins and reopened immediately following the completion of the show.

Please take your time and be patient when traveling to and from the show. I’m looking forward to seeing you all there!

As residents of O’Fallon, you should always be able to reach out to your elected officials and ask questions about what is happening in O’Fallon. Having open communications is important to me and something I care very deeply about. Thank you for reading, and please remember, my door is always open!
