2019/11/25 - Mayor's Column: Happy Holidays

“An Open Door to O’Fallon”
A Weekly Note from Mayor Herb Roach

We are almost to the end of 2019. Can you believe it? Not only is it nearly the end of the year, it will also soon be time for the holidays. There are many events and programs lined up until the end of the year that will help us celebrate the end of 2019 in style!

Thanksgiving gives us a chance to slow down (at least for a day) and say thanks. On November 30th, we turn the page on Thanksgiving and open the chapter on Christmas and end-of-year celebrations!

On November 30th, beginning at 6 p.m., the annual O’Fallon Illuminated Holiday Parade will take place. This parade begins on 7th Street, near Community Park and follows Lincoln north to State Street, the route will then turn east on State for a few blocks. The parade will turn on Vine Street before ending at O’Fallon Station.

As is tradition, we will light up the Downtown District with holiday lights as the parade travels by.

Please remember that this event is outside and after the sun goes down. Please dress for the weather and be safe.

The Downtown District is sure to be busy before the parade even begins. Saturday, November 30th is also Small Business Saturday. Many of the businesses in the Downtown District have specials and sales that are sure to help those looking to take care of their holiday shopping.

A few days later, on December 7th, the Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown District are hosting the 4th annual “Tinsel Around Town” shopping event. During that day, you can visit the winter market at O’Fallon Station, then visit shops in the District while being serenaded by street musicians and holiday music. The event runs 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.…perfect timing to shop and grab lunch!

Did you enjoy the Vine Street Market this season? If so, December 7th will be a great opportunity to visit your favorite regular market season vendors. This is a one-day event coinciding with Tinsel Around Town. The market will not be open again until May, so get your market fix before the long winter season sets in.

Speaking of O’Fallon Station, this event space has been widely popular since it was opened nearly a year ago. Our Parks and Recreation Department has all kinds of events lined up at the Station during the holiday season, including visits from Santa and holiday horse and carriage rides. You can view what is planned at https://bit.ly/3471YEM.

Lastly, I want to remind everyone that during the holidays, our employees also need time to spend with family and friends. City Hall will be closed on Thanksgiving and the day after Thanksgiving, on Christmas Day, and on New Year’s Day.

As residents of O’Fallon, you should always be able to reach out to your elected officials and ask questions about what is happening in O’Fallon. Having open communications is important to me and something I care very deeply about. Thank you for reading, and please remember, my door is always open!
