2019/12/2 - Mayor's Column: Prepare for the Census

“An Open Door to O’Fallon”
A Weekly Note from Mayor Herb Roach

Every ten years the U.S. population is counted in the decennial census. Soon, the 2020 Census will be here. So, what exactly is the census and why does it matter?

The census is a count of the U.S. population mandated by the U.S. Constitution.  The data collected determines the number of seats each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives and is referred to when the government is distributing federal funding to local communities.

Some of you may be thinking, how does the census impact me? The census data retrieved is extremely important in guiding decision makers determining the best use of funding. Our schools, emergency services, health clinics, housing, and infrastructure all receive funding based on the census.

For each person that lives in O’Fallon (and is counted in the Census) the City of O’Fallon receives approximately $122 from the State of Illinois Local Government Distributive Fund. This vital funding source goes towards many basic services such as roads and public safety.

By April 1, 2020, every home will receive an invitation to participate in the 2020 Census.  You can choose to fill it out in any of the following ways: by phone, by mail, or online. The 2020 Census marks the first time in the history of the United States that you'll have the option to respond online. You can even respond online on your mobile device.  On average, it takes no more than 10 minutes to answer the questions on the census. The U.S. Census Bureau is bound by law to protect your answers and keep them strictly confidential.

The U.S. Census Bureau also offers temporary employment opportunities. Jobs range from census takers, to recruiting assistants, to office and supervisory staff. Visit their website, www.census.gov, to find out more information on positions and how to apply.

If you have any questions about the specifics on the census, I strongly encourage you again to visit their website as there is a ton of useful information. We hope you take the time on April 1 to participate in the 2020 Census!

As residents of O’Fallon, you should always be able to reach out to your elected officials and ask questions about what is happening in O’Fallon. Having open communications is important to me and something I care very deeply about. Thank you for reading, and please remember, my door is always open!
