2020/12/14 - Mayor's Column: Holiday Safety Tips

An Open Door to O’Fallon”
A Weekly Note from Mayor Herb Roach

We are now less than two weeks until Christmas and the holiday season. Many of us have not finished our shopping, so I would like to share some safety tips with you, so your holiday is bright and enjoyable.

  • If you have packages being shipped to you, make sure you do not let them lay on your porch.  If you are not home, arrange for a neighbor or trusted one to watch for them.
  • If you are wanting to leave a gift for your trash hauler, watch out for people going around and taking envelopes taped to trash cans. Believe me, it really happens!
  • When shopping:
    • Close all windows and lock your car doors. Gifts inside vehicles make for easy targets.
    • Try to park in a lighted area that will have other people around.
    • Do not leave a purse, phone, keys, or other valuables in plain sight.
    • Be observant as you walk to and from the stores to your car.
  • Please do not leave children in the car by themselves.
  • Do not make a practice of leaving your car running while you run in to a store or into your home.
  • Have the following information so that you can give police quickly if your car is stolen:
    • Year / Make / Color of your car.
    • License Plate Numbers.
    • Vehicle Identification Numbers.

All of these are good practices to follow no matter where you are. We hope that this will prevent something from ruining the enjoyment of your holidays.

When talking about safety we want to remind you when you are out shopping please take the proper precautions to prevent yourself from spending your holidays in the hospital by practicing proper distancing, wearing masks, and washing your hands.

As residents of O’Fallon, you should always be able to reach out to your elected officials and ask questions about what is happening in O’Fallon. Having open communications is important to me and something I care very deeply about. Thank you for reading, and please remember, my door is always open (virtually, at least)!
