2021/03/23 - Mayor's Column: COVID-19 Vaccines

“An Open Door to O’Fallon”
A Weekly Note from Mayor Herb Roach

It really seems like we have been dealing with all the ramifications involved with the COVID virus forever but in fact the first case of COVID was discovered here in St. Clair County just a little over a year ago on March 14, 2020. Since that time, we have seen so many changes in our lives and the lives of our neighbors and friends.

Over the past year, we have had over 300,000 COVID tests done here in St. Clair County. Over 29,000 St. Clair County residents have tested Positive for the Virus. And sadly we have lost over 500 individuals to the Virus.  Just like all other parts of the world, O’Fallon has lost some great people from COVID-19.

In addition, we have seen businesses closed for periods of time, and some have closed permanently. We have seen many people’s employment terminated or hours reduced due to these closures. We have seen graduations, picnics, sporting activities and other gatherings cancelled. Schools have had to use virtual classes because of the Virus and the fear that large gatherings would help spread it.

But now there seems to be a bright light at the end of the tunnel and it is not a train coming at us. No, it is the availability of not just one, but three new vaccines that are now available in our area for our citizens.

At this point, over 100,000 shots have been given and the county now has the capability of being able to deliver approximately 25,000 to 30,000 shots weekly between the mass vaccination site and our local hospitals.  This would mean that by sometime in July, every citizen in the County could receive their shots if they wanted them.

We have already seen a reduction in the positivity rates for the testing and have seen our businesses being able to reopen on a modified schedule.

I would urge you to get your vaccination when it becomes available to you.  My wife and I have done so, and with little side effects (only a sore arm for a day or two).

I would also urge you to keep using precautions and with everyone’s cooperation, I am hoping that we are going to see things continue to reopen and return back to normal in the coming months.

As residents of O’Fallon, you should always be able to reach out to your elected officials and ask questions about what is happening in O’Fallon. Having open communications is important to me and something I care very deeply about. Thank you for reading, and please remember, my door is always open!
