2021/04/12 - Mayor's Column: Helpful Hints During Spring

“An Open Door to O’Fallon”
A Weekly Note from Mayor Herb Roach

As spring weather breaks, it means outside work around the house and yard. I would just like to take a minute to ask everyone to consider a couple of items:

  • Please be safe when climbing on ladders, our ambulances don’t need extra work.
  • It is greatly appreciated If you can help a neighbor that has a hard time getting around.
  • If you are new to the City, we do have a NO Burning ordinance.  It is in place for health concerns and safety of many. Just recently, someone was burning leaves and sticks and before long we had firetrucks responding and highways blocked because that fire had unintentionally engulfed the nearby garage in flames.
  • Please do not blow grass or leaves on to the street or down the storm drains or thrown them in the ditch or into a drainage way. If you have a lawn service please let them know that they should not do this.

Grass and yard debris in the storm drains or drainage way can cause a back-up. It can also  make the pavement dangerous for cars, bicycle riders and motorcycle riders if blown into the street.  In fact, we already had one accident due to it this year.

We have also had to send out our Sewer Vacuum Truck due to sticks and other debris going down storm drains (big sticks that don't normally fall in their on their own).  Please remember that we have yard waste recycling available for all of our residents through the contract with Waste Management.  Why increase unnecessary spending of your tax dollars to clean out drains when other services are already available?

These little things can go a long way in preventing accidents, and flooding problems which can impact other residents’ homes and businesses.

And on a closing note, I want to THANK EVERYONE for the well wishes on my re-election.  It is my honor to serve you as Mayor of O’Fallon for four more years.  I will do my best to continue to earn your confidence, respect and trust.

As residents of O’Fallon, you should always be able to reach out to your elected officials and ask questions about what is happening in O’Fallon. Having open communications is important to me and something I care very deeply about. Thank you for reading, and please remember, my door is always open!
